Lost InTranslation
A night at the opera… sort of
A love letter, not a museum piece
Opera has been around for hundreds of years however, many sceptics have suggested that it should stay in the past.
'Lost in Translation' is a love letter from two young Australian opera singers, highlighting the value of this art form through some of its best known and loved arias, duets and beyond. It follows our attempts to find the reasons behind the scepticism and acts as our rebuttal in defence of one of (at least according to us) the worlds greatest art forms.
Attention
We know attention spans aren't what they used to be, not that we're blaming anyth... oh wait was that my phone?... where were we? To open our show we explore ways we can combat this. Our conclusion: that modern problems require modern solutions.
Language
Nobody expects to understand every word at a rock concert. This act explores why opera seems to be held to a higher standard. Through good to spectacularly bad translations we make the case that the true beauty of opera isn't in the small details of language but the powers that music and the voice possess to transcend these barriers and demonstrate the beauty and tragedy of the human experience.
Storylines and Then and Now
Yes, the plots are unhinged. Yes, an alarming number of women die at the end. The show does not look away from this. It also does not pretend that opera hasn't always been a living, changing, sometimes infuriating art form that was revolutionary when it began and still has something urgent to say. This act brings those two ideas together and lets the audience decide what comes next.
